«b»Gerrit Battem«/b» or «b»Gerard van Battum«/b» (ca. «u»1636 «/u», «u»Rotterdam «/u» - buried «u»October 24 «/u», «u»1684 «/u», Rotterdam) was a superior «u»Dutch «/u» landscape painter.
Battem was mostly active in Rotterdam and for three years in «u»Utrecht «/u», but a trip along the «u»Rhine «/u» may have been a large inspiration for his topics. He painted perspective views, mountainous scenery, with shepherds, robbers, etc. therein, as well as winter scenes. He painted at the same time as Snellings, but his style of painting is broader and bolder. In the 1670s he also painted figures in «u»Jacob van Ruisdael «/u»'s landscapes.
Of greater value than the pictures of this artist are his designs, which are altogether superior, and bought dearly to adorn the first-rate collections.
