At portsea, on monday last, after a lingering affliction of many months, much respected and esteemed and deeply regretted, Mr. Thomas Cole portrait painter of queen street aged 30 years leaving a widow and 4 children to feel acutely their irreputable loss. To his native town his untaught genius would, had a longer life been granted to him, reflected his highest credit having in the course of his short life painted numberless portraits which were really likenesses. Two specimens of his talent will hand his name down to future times - that of the respected physician of the beneficial society Dr. Porter, and that splended copy of Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait of the late king William IV, which he copied by permission of Sir P. Durham, expressly for the societys hall and which was we beilieve his last effort.
Note: This text was taken from a framed newspaper clipping passed down to Anna Sophia Cole, who passed it on to her daughter Annie Sarah Emmaline Brittan, who passed it on to her daughter Ethel Ivy Grace Didham. Along with the news clipping, an unfinished family portrait was also passed down to the first born daughter of each generation. The portrait is of Thomas Coles' wife, his eldest daughter(Anna Sophia), and eldest son. It is believed the painting is unfinished due to the death of Thomas Cole.
