IHOIART, MIonday.
MIr. Alex. HIarley, head master of
the .lacquarie-street state school, died
to-day, aged 55 years. Deceased had
been in the Education Department many
years, and.e was also one of the staunhoest
yachtsmen in Hobart. He hlad been in
indifferent health for some time through
liver trouble, and was to ieava been
operated upon, but it was found that
there were so many complications thet
it was decided naot to proceed with it.
Deceased was trained as a pupil teacher
at Battery Point, Hobart, under the late
IMr. Jas. Rulc. u His first country salhol
was at Cormiston, West Tamar, and he
is well remembered in the North for the
very excellent work he did at Perth prior
to his ,being promoted to llacquarie
street, Iobart. He was deservedly one
of the maost popular men in the service.

Perth 23 years ago last Ohristmas, and
ha: been at. Hobart ever since. it will
be remembered that the late Trooper
Betts was one of Mr. Harley's pupil
teachers, and was oni leave of absence on
active service duirisg the Boer war. Hle
joined the Second Tasmanian Contingent.

was only married about six months ao
to Miss A. G. Coates, teacher at Rose
