Richard reached the age of 16 in 1746, he is shown on the 1746 tax list as one of the tiltable in the household of Robert Boatman. He is the First son of Robert and is listed first in his Will. He is also found in his Uncle Richard Boatman's Will. He was probably married about 1750. It is possible that he married Lucy Doggett. Richard Boatman and Lucy appear in court for jury hearing on a cause of action they had brought against Wm. Doggett. Note: One Wm. Doggett had been appointed guardian of the minor children of a James Doggettwho died in early 1758 ie, Jenney, Elizabeth, James, Spencer, Rebecca and Lucy. This causes me to wonder if Richard Boatman may have married the young Lucy Doggett, and that the two ofthem have brought suit by her, a wife would only join her husband in filing suit under the most unusual circumstances, like if she had been injured or damaged in some way..W.G.Richard Boatman, Jr., of Lancaster Co. used an "R" in lieu of an "X" when signing his name. Richard Boatman of Lunenburg Co, VA, used an "R" in lieu of an "X". Richard Boatman of Pittsylvania Co, VA, used an "R" in Lieu of an "X". Bearing in mind that neither Richard's father nor his mother signed their names, Richard's father used an "R" and that is likely the only letter Richard ever learned to form, or he used his father's seal. The following are some of the deeds found in Richard's name. July 13, 1765: Richard Boatman (blacksmith) pays Waterman (shoemaker) the sum of 55 pounds current Virginia money for Waterman's interest in land left by their father Robert Boatman. Said sale subject to the possession of the land by their mother during her widowhood (Deed Book 18, p 39). November 25, 1766: Richard Boatman & Apphia sell the above land to Benjamin Cundiff for 100 pounds. Richard signs this deed with an "R"; Apphia sighs this deed with a "+". Witnesses are Wm. Taylor, Thos. Miller, Dale Carter, and Waterman Boatman. (Recorded in Deed Book 18, p 142). Proved in court on December 15, 1766. Waterman was not among the witnesses who appeared in court for the proving.September 25, 1771: Richard Boatman of Lunenburg Co, VA, gives a deed to Apphia Boatman of Lancaster Co, VA, for Negro boy Harry consideration "Love & Affection & 5 Shilling". Richard signs the deed with an "R". April 16, 1768: George Carter, Loudoun Co, VA, sells Richard Boatman of Brunswick Co, VA, 100 acres in Lunenburg Co, on the North side of the Meherrin River, for 55 pounds. Wits: David Moss, John Rhodes, Jeremiah Mize, and Howell Mize. (Deed Book 11, p 144, Lunenburg Co, VA). February 24, 1774: Richard Boatman to Thomas Townsend (Pittsylvania Co, VA) for debt of 30 pounds 7 shillings due to Thomas Townsend. Richard Boatman delivers to him one wagon, some guns, and six horses, including "one flea-bitten mare", Thomas Townsend to sell goods and stock anytime after March 24, giving Boatman the over plus after costs of sale and debt are paid. Signed Richard "R" Boatman: Wits: Will Tunstall, Jno. Lyttle, William Frogg. (Vol. 3, p 448). March 31, 1774: Richard Boatman of Pittsylvania Co, VA, makes a deed of trust to Samuel Walker for Boatman's wagon, guns, and six horses. Walker can sell same after December 25 to satisfy debt of 12 pounds 10 shillings. Signed Richard "R". Boatman. Wits; Edmund Lyne, Joseph Cooper. Ricahrd Boatman was taxed in Henry Co, VA for 0.9.5 (which I believe would be 9 shilling 5 pence) in 1778. Then 1779 he apparently was a bit more prosperous as his tax was 2.14.4 (two pounds, 14 shilling, 4 pence). We find no record of any land transactions in Henry Co, VA. We must assume taxes were on personal property. It is believed that Richard Boatman married Agga Mitchell, the daughter of Robert Mitchell. We find in Henry Co, recorded April 10, 1786, a Will for Robert Mitchell in which he mentions his daught
