3. Closer examination of the Farm Horse Tax in 1797-1798, finds a John Rankin, Cookston, and a John Rankin, Wardneuk. John in Cookston ties in with where his family were born. The John Rankin in Wardneuk would be 72 years of age. There is no likely record of death.
4. (see 5) It is not known where Cookston Farm is, although there is a Cockstone Farm North. of Kilbirnie, (55.7911° N, 6816° W). As William Rankin, b 1800, birth was registered at Kilmarnock, this farm is unlikely to be the correct one. (7th child of John Rankin Farmer in Cookston and Jean Galt)

Rolls of Male Heads of Families
In 1834, the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland passed the Veto Act, removing the absolute right of landowners to appoint ministers to their parish. The Act gave male heads of families who were communicants with the parish the right to veto the appointment of a new minister if a majority of them objected. To this end, the Assembly instructed kirk sessions to draw up rolls of the male heads of families in each parish. We have transcribed the surviving rolls, and are publishing them here. At Ayr the fifth day of November one thousand eight hundred & forty years. Compeared John Sturrock writer in Kilmarnock who produced inventory of the personal Estate of the deceased John Rankin after designed and of which inventory the tenor follows.-
Inventory of the personal estate of the deceased, John Rankin late Farmer in Wardneuk in parish of Kilmarnock, who died there upon the twelfth day of September, Eighteen hundred and thirtynine years-

Sum of the inventory Seven hundred and seventy eight pounds, three shillings and six pence Sterling (signed, David Rankin, Will Eaton – At Kilmarnock the fifth day of November Eighteen hundred and forty years in presence of William Eaton Esquire, Commissary Depute of the Commissarial of Ayrshire Compeare David Rankin Farmer in Wardneuk, in the parish of Kilmarnock, son and executor dative qua nearest in kin of the deceased, John Rankin late farmer there and the said David Rankin solemnly sworn and examined Depones that the said John Rankin his father died at Wardneuk aforesaid upon the twelfth day of September, Eighteen hundred and thirty nine years and the deponent has entered upon the possession and management of his personal estate as executor dative qua nearest in kin decerned to him by the said Commissary Depute upon the first day of October last that the deponent does not know of any settlement or writing executed by the deceased relative to the disposal of his personal estate or any part of them- that the foregoing Inventory which is signed by the Deponent and the said Commissary Depute as relative hereto is a full and true Inventory of all the personal or moveable Estate and effects of the said deceased John Rankin wheresoever situated already recovered or known to the deponent to be existing belonging or due to him beneficially at the time of his death And that the said Estate situate(d) in Scotland is above the value of six hundred pounds and under the value of eight hundred pounds Sterling.
