Adriaan Loosjes was born 15 April 1689 at West-Zaandam and died there 24 March 1767; he was a lumber dealer at Zaandam and was chosen as preacher of the West-Zaandam Frisian congregation in 1714, where he served until 1762. Because this office demanded so much time—Loosjes had not received special training and gave much time to the study of Latin, Bible, and history—he retired from business to devote himself entirely to the ministry. In 1747, during a visit of the Dutch stadholder William IV of Orange, Loosjes addressed him in the name of all Mennonites of North Holland. Loosjes published a funeral sermon for his colleague Klaas Jacobsz Nen, De gezegende naagedachtenis des Rechtveerdigen (West-Zaandam, 1755). He cooperated with others in producing a translation of the Latin works of Flavius Josephus, which was published at Alkmaar in 1732 and 1736. His son Petrus Loosjes edited his interesting historical notations on the region in which he lived: Beschrijving der Zaanlandsche Dorpen (1794). Loosjes is also said to have published an address on the Acts of the Apostles, and some papers on comets and on Palestine. Adriaan Loosjes was married in 1714 to Guurtje Klaasd. Visser and after her death to Trijntje Louwe in 1725; both were of Zaandam.
