Garrit Van Surksum, 88, of Hospers, died Tuesday, April 25 in the Orange City Hospital.
Services were held Saturday in the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. J. Mark Beach officiated. Burial was in the Hospers Cemetery under direction of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Hospers.
Mr. Van Surksum was born Jan. 3, 1901 in Alton and was a lifelong Hospers area resident. He married Agnes Kreykes Feb. 15, 1923 at rural Hospers. The couple farmed in the Hospers area until their retirement. Mr. Van Surksum was a member of the FirstChristian Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John and his wife LaVonne of Sheldon and William and his wife Marge of Sheldon; three daughters, Carrie and her husband Dr. Richard Venema of Ontario, California, Ella Mae and her husband Mark Horjus of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Wilma and her husband Marvin Vink of Sheldon; a sister, Mrs. Bert Gertrude DeJong of Sheldon; 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son and a sister.
