Maurice FitzGerald was a Norman who held land at Llansteffan in Carmarthenshire, on the south-west coast of Wales. His parents were Gerald of Windsor, Constable of Pembroke and the Welsh Nesta Verch Rhys.
In 1169, Maurice Fitzgerald with his brother Robert Fitz-Stephen and nephew Raymond FitzGerald, were with a group of Norman mercenaries from Wales led by Richard de Clare in support of Dermot MacMurrough, the deposed and exiled King of Leinster who was hoping to recover his Kingship of Leinster from Rory O'Connor, High King of Ireland. Wexford fell to the Normans within a few days of their landing, they succeeded in capturing Waterford, and went on to capture Dublin in 1171.
