· (17) Sir Thomas Wentworth, who fought valiantly on the side of Henry VI., at the battle of Hexham, 3 April, 1463, when he was made prisoner with the Duke of Somerset and others. He married Joan, daughter of Sir Richard Redman, Kt., of Harwood Tower, in Yorkshire, and had Issue, two sons, William and John. Of the latter, nothing further is known. The former--· (18) William Wentworth, Esq., married, 1460-1, Isabel, daughter of Sir Richard Fitzwilliams, of Aldwarke, in Yorkshire, by Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Thomas Clarell of the same place, and had issue, Thomas, Ralphe, George, William, and Elizabeth. The latter married, first, Thomas Lea, Esq., of Middleton, and secondly, Henry Arthington, Esq. Of the three younger sons, there is no record save of their names. The father died in 1477, and the line was continued by the eldest son--· (19) Sir Thomas Wentworth, who was knighted for his bravery at the battle of Spurs, 16 August, 1513. It will be seen that down to this period, the successors to the estate of Wentworth-Woodhouse were almost invariably only sons, and as invariably married heiresses or co-heiresses.
· By this, time, therefore, the wealth of this family had become enormous, as may be judged by the fact, that this Sir Thomas bore the sobriquet of "Golden Thomas." He paid at one time a heavy fine to be excused from accepting the Order of the Bath, and in 1528 abtained a license* from Henry VIII. to remain covered in the royal presence. The reason alleged was his infirmity arising from old age. But, as he lived twenty years longer, (he died 5 Dec., 1548,) the presumption is, that the license was purchased at a great price for the purpose of gratifying a whim or some feeling of personal pride. He married Beatrix, daughter of Sir Richard Woodruff, Kt., of Woolley, in Yorkshire, and widow of John Drax, Esq., of Woodhull, by whom he had five sons and three daughters, viz: William, Gervase, Michael, Thomas, Bryan, Elizabeth, Isabel, and Beatrice.

· Woolley Hall is a country house in Woolley, West Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade II* listed building.[1]

· Sir Richard Woodroffe (c.1440 - 1522) was the Sheriff of York between 1510 and 1518, and one of the last members of the Woodroffe/Woodruff family to reside in the Hall.[5] In 1559, Francis Woodroffe was forced to sell the house and all his lands in Woolley and Notton to his cousin Michael Wentworth, the great-great-grandson of Sir Richard Woodroffe and descendant of Sir Thomas Wentworth (aka Golden Thomas), the great grandfather of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, for £6000, the equivalent of nearly £1,200,000 today. Francis was the brother of Richard Woodroffe, who married Elizabeth Percy, the daughter of the infamous Thomas Percy, 7th Earl of Northumberland, one of the two ring leaders of the Rising of the North.[5]
· The present building in Woolley is an example of early Jacobean architecture, and was begun about 1635 and added onto at the turn of the 19th century by the architect Jeffry Wyatville.[5] It stands in the village of Woolley near the M1 Motorway. Godfrey Wentworth was High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1862–63.
· After serving the Wentworth family into the 20th century, the hall was a college for a period. It is now owned by Wakefield Council, who use it as a conference centre and wedding location.
· Architecture
· Michael Wentworth began rebuilding Woolley Hall in 1635.[6] The new Woolley Hall consisted of an 'H'-shaped building of moderate size. An east wing was added to the south front around 1680. The western wing was added during the mid eighteenth century. The eastern wings which form the rest of the present building were added in the early nineteenth century.

Became a 'Knight of Reformation' in 1529. In 1550 was granted the Manor of Hocking & Stepney. Enormously wealthy for the times, being called 'Golden Thomas'. He paid Henry VIII a large fine to be excused from accpeting the 'Order of Bath', &; in 1428 obtained a license from the King to remain covered in the royal presence. this cost him a small fortune, but it must have given him a lot of personal satisfaction.
