Sarah Calder is believed to be first wife of Thomas Whaley (b.c1750). John Calder and his brother Archibald Calder were Edisto Island planters. John Calder's Will was signed November 30, 1766, probated December 12, 1766. He mentioned his wife Sarah, a son Archibald and daughters Mariann (Grimball) and Sarah, under 21 years. His brother Archibald signed his Will March 22, 1777. He mentioned his wife Mary and daughter Martha, under 16 years, and an unborn child. Archibald named his cousin Thomas Whaley as one of the executors of his estate. This points to Sarah Calder, daughter of John Calder, as being the wife of Thomas Whaley. She would have been born circa 1746, and married Thomas Whaley between November 30, 1766 and March 22, 1777. The fact that this union produced a son by the name of John Calder Whaley lends credence to the statement that her name was Sarah and her father's name was John Calder.
Thomas Whaley had four wives, namely Sarah Calder, Mary Sealy, Mary Ann Seabrook, and Mary Wilkinson. Disregard any reference to a fifth wife.
