James Smith, born Jacques Le Serrurier in St. Quentin, Aisne, France, son of Jacques and Elizabeth (Leger) Le Serrurier, and Uncle of Peter Gignilliant. He married prior to October, 1682 , when they were in London, Marie (------), probably also born Le Serrurier. He was naturalized in England 1 June 1685. He was a merchant in London, but went to South Carolina by 1699. In 1702 he was elected to the Commons House of Assembly there as Serurier Smith. He moved to St. Thomas after 1706 and married at the St. Eustatius RDC in April or May 1712, Elizabeth Yeamans, daughter of Henry and Mary (Shute) Yeamans of London and Antigua. James Smith died on St. Thomas prior to May 15 1719, when administration of the estate was begun. His widow married Jan Vlack, who died 6 August 1723, and Johann Hein rich Sieben, who died prior to 4 June 17 34.
