Killing at Poynor.
A fatal tragedy took place, on 4a
Saturday afternoon . about 1 o'clock,
near the little village of Poynor, in the
south weal part of the county, on the
west side of the river, when Tom Cates,
a young farmer, shot and killed Thoa.
J. Strong, another farmer who lived
near by. , . '..
The cause of the trouble between the
two was over some peaohes, Cates be
ing a renter on Strong's land, and Catee
claimed the peaches belonged to him.
as part ot the lease, Strong however
had eome to the plaoe and driven in the
orchard and gathered several busbels oi
peaches', and kad started to drive off
when Cates oame out of the house,
with a shotgun in his hands, btroog
asked Cates if he had dug his potatoes,
and when Cates replied that be bad not,
Strong told blm, that he had better dig
them as he was going to turn his hogs
in the orchard Monday. Cates replied
that if be did he would turn them out.
Strong had gotted in his hack, two
of bis ouildreh, a girl about 13 years
old, and a boy about 11, and two neigh
bor children, being with him, the boy
started to drive off, when Catee told
titroog he would give him two minutes
to get off of the place. Strong took
bold of the lines, stopped the team, got
out and went back Into the yard and
started to remonstrate with Cates, tell
ing him not to "get mad and do any
shooting, and as hs did so started to
take hold of the barrel of the gun,
whereupon Cates stepped back far
enough to laise the gun to a shooting
position, and shot Strong, the charge
striking him la the breast.
On acoount of the storm and high
water having put the telephone Con
nections out of order, word of the trag
edy did not reach here until Cates waa
brought over by eilieeus ot the neigh
borhood, to the west end of the bridge,
about 2:00 o'clock Sunday morning,
and from there telephoned to sheriff
Williams, who went over in a bout and
brought Cates. to town, and placed him
la jail.
Coroner Proctor and Deputy Prosecu
tor Sloan, went over Sunday morning
and held the inquest, the Jury Bndlag
that Strong came to his death at the
hands of Tom Cates.
Tbe prisoner on Sunday morning
made a statement to Deputy Prosecutor
Sloan, In which he olaimed that Strong
had oome in his yard and had threaten
ed to break his neck, and used abusive
language toward blm, and made a mo
tion as if to draw a pistol, but the tes
timony at the inquest, of Strong's two
children and tbe two other young girls
who were present, oontradicted this
statement Strong who was a deputy
sheriff did have a pistol on him, but it
was in the right hip pocket ot his trous
ers, and he bad a pair ot overalls on
over them, and they were buttoned up
light, while Strong's right sleeve show
ed powder burns from the shot gun,
Cates has not so far asked for a pre
liminary hearing. He is about 30 years
old, and has a wife and child. He waa
raised in that neighborhood, and bis
father who lives near by was in town
Wednesday, to see his son.
. Tbos. 3. 8trong, was probably one of
the best known oititens of that part of
the oounty, hs was formerly a school
teacher, but ot late years was engaged
in farming. He was about 36 years old,
and leaves a wife and two children. The
funeral was held Sunday, the bedy be
ing interred at tbe Poynor cemetery,
tbe funeral was conduoted by the I, 0
0. F. lodge of Poynor, ot which the de
ceased was Noble Grand. A very large
orowd was present, as he was a popular
and well liked citizen.
