A 600+ page "Genealogical Family Register" and "History of John and Christian Fretz" by Rev. A.J. Fretz of Milton New Jersey, published 1890 by the Mennonite Publishing Co., Elkhart, IN is entered in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, D.C. According to this record, John "The Weaver" Fretz emmigrated with two brothers during "the last persecution" of Mennonites by the state church (1710 - 1720) from Manheim, Baden, Germany (formerly Rheinish, Prussia). One brother did not survive the voyage.
The exact location and year that John and his brother, Christian, landed is not precisely known but John setteled at Deep Run, Buck's county, PA. Christian settled in Tinicum township, Buck's county, along Tinicum Creek, an area that became known as Heaney's Mill.
John settled in Plumstead township, later (1741) to be called Bedminster on 230 acres purchased from Bartholomew Longstreth in 1737 for 106 pounds. This became known as "The Old Fretz homestead", about one mile N.E. of Bedminster. John purchased four adjoining properties; 69 acres from Samuel High, 60 acres from Ruben Miller, 57 acres from Ely Fretz, and 44 acres from Isaac Fretz.
The remains of John "The Weaver" Fretz and his wives repose in the cemetary adjoining the "Old Stone Church" in Buck's county. As of 1880, there were in excess of 4,740 known decendents of John "The Weaver" Fretz.
