The 1900 census for the Pope family lists George as being from Ireland. In 1910 John lists his father as being English (He is not physically present in the family in either census...) There is no other record of George's origin.

George took off and we have no record of him. Do you think he might be one of those men who maintained 2 separate families? He was listed as a sailor on son John's application for delayed registration of birth record. We know he worked on boats. But no one seems to know what happened to him in 1879.Perhaps he returned to England and the family he already had there with Louisa Wall? That being said, there is no conclusive proof that George was from Somerset at all. In fact, the 1900 census for the Pope family lists George as having been from Ireland -although in 1910 John Joseph Pope lists his father as of English ancestry. (In any case, George is not physically present in the family in either census...and no one makes any statement as to why.) There is no other record of George's origin. Again, this listing of William and Sarah as parents is strictly conjecture, with some support from other member trees
