My fair Childeric, how I love you so
I am a prisoner of this place

This desire I feel for you will stay so

Basine, or Basina (438-477) was the Queen of Thuringia. She had her royal title during the middle of the fifth century. Before becoming the Queen of Thuringia, Basina was the daughter of King Basin. This gave her the title of the Saxon Princess. Basina married King Bisinus and later became the Queen of Thuringia. Although she was married to King Bisinus, she longed to be with Childeric I who was the King of the Salian Franks, which at the time was a German tribe. It is rumored that he may have seduced her to make her feel that way for him. She followed him back to where he lived and she ended up asking for his hand in marriage. Together, her and Childeric had four children; Clovis I, Audofleda, Lanthilde, and Aboflede. By the age of 15, Clovis I took over for his father and became the king. Basina is said to be a prophet, and associated with magical powers after having a vision regarding her and Childeric I. It is not really known for sure whether or not this is true. She died at the tender age of 39.
Basina was writing to Childeric I in my heroide. When I was doing my research about her the one thing that stuck out to me was her love for Childeric. From the outside, it seems like it’s very inappropriate and wrong for her to want to be with a different man than her husband, King Bisinus but from spending more time in depth on her you can tell that her and Childeric actually had a real love for each other. In her life, it seems as though her most monumental moments are spent with him. They created a family together and spent their days loving each other. The more I thought about it, the more it seemed very appropriate for her to be writing to him.
In my poem, Basina’s struggle is to be with her true love, Childeric I. For quite a while she was married to King Bisinus and lived her life unfulfilled. When she met Childeric she was seduced by his charm and could not be without him. When I was writing this poem from her perspective, I was writing at the time when he was back in his native land and she was still living with King Bisinus. I felt as though she was desperate to be with him and longed for him to be with her and that was the reason why I wanted for this poem to be more of a struggle for longing to be with him. Like I had previously stated, her love for Childeric while being married seems inappropriate and I wanted people to actually see that she really did have the truest of feelings for him.
My poem seems like a typical ovidian heroide. Basina really is not known for anything all that special besides being the Queen of Thuringia. The love triangle between her, King Bisinus, and Childeric I seems like such a monumental part of who she is. It conforms in the sense that there is this beautiful queen who is so desperate to be with a man. From my poem, Basina seem reliant on Childeric to make her happy. It seems almost like a desperate call for him, quite like many of the poems that Ovid has written from a woman’s perspective. Another aspect of my poem is that at the time of the poem, there is an affair going on. Basina is still technically married to Bisinus so she is being unfaithful. You see a lot of this kind of behavior in Ovid’s poems that he writes. Overall, I feel like my poem is something that you would see during the time Ovid was around making poetry.
