If James is the son of Nathaniel Matheny then he should have been born in Virginia, as Nathaniel lived his whole live there. The 1820 census has a James Mathena in Ohio, who possibly is this James. The only other important information on James is a declaration he made for his nephew Jacob who was the son of James's brother Nathaniel Matheny Jr:
1860: Declaration by James Matheny as to (nephew) Jacob Matheny's Military Service: State of IL, Co. of Cumberland.
On this 23rd day of April 1860, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace for the Said Co. & Said State, James Matheny, aged 70 years past, a resident of Cumberland Co. in the State of IL, who, after being duly sworn according to law, declares that he was personally & intimately acquainted with Jacob Matheny, now of Fairfield Co. in the State of OH, from his infancy until after the close of the War of 1812; that said Jacob Matheny is his declarant's nephew, that said said (sic) acquaintance was in Monongalia Co. in the state of VA (now Preston Co.) & in time of said war; he & said Jacob Matheny lived less than 1 mile apart & since said war, he, declarant, has visited him in Fairfield Co., OH 3 times; that the declarant knows of his own personal knowledge that said Jacob Mathaney is the identical said Jacob Matheny who served a tour of military duty as a private in Capt. John -- ? Co. of VA militia in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on this 18th Day of June 1812; that said Jacob Matheny was drafted at the Co. of Monongahela (now Preston Co.) the said state of VA for a term of six months & Mar.ed to Morgantown in said Co. a distance of abt 23 miles & from there to Dunkard Bottom abt the samedistance - 23 miles; thence to the place of discharge 2-3 miles making in all same 48 or 49 miles & near the foot of the Briery Mountain he was honorably discharged from said service after being in actual service in said war, including distance to travel more than 14 days; declarant further declares that he was acquainted with the service of said Jacob Matheny from the fact that he, declarant, served as a private in Capt. John Sawyers Co. in the aforesaid war above stated, that said Jacob Matheny & he, declarant, messed together & returned to our homes together, & that we were discharged on the announcement of peace & close of said war; Declarant also states that he has no interest in the application of said Jacob Matheny for Bounty Land; & further that we were drafted abt, I cannot recolect the day of the month or the month, AD 1815 & served as aforesaid until the term above stated.
