Burial will follow at the family plot in the West Cemetery, Hospers. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday night at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers, Iowa.
He was born in Castlewood, South Dakota on February 20, 1926 to Gladys (Weis) and Hugh Magee. At the age of 1 he moved to Hospers, Iowa and was raised by his grandparents, Gerrit and Elizabeth Mouw. Some of Duane's best memories were of hunting and trapping along the Floyd River.
After graduating from Hospers High School in 1943, he briefly worked for Douglas Aircraft in California, and then enlisted in the Navy in February 1944 and proudly served on the USS Talladega and spent his 19th birthday at the battle at Iwo Jima.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Anna Beth Schaafsma, on December 27, 1946. After attending Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, Duane and Anne moved to Missoula, Montana where he attended the University of Montana, graduating in 1951 with a degree in Forestry/ Range Management. They lived in Circle and Winnett, Montana while Duane worked for the Soil Conservation Service.
In 1954, Duane took a different career path and went to work for Lion Oil Co in Bismark, North Dakota as a Petroleum Landman. Working as a Landman would take them to Denver, Colorado, El Dorado, Arkansas, Liberal, Kansas and Midland Texas, where they lived for 30 years. In 1960 Duane and two friends formed their own company, "Chalfant, Magee and Hansen, Inc." (later including Clifton) as Oil and Gas Lease Brokers. He was an active member of the Permian Basin Landman's Association. He once said he couldn't think of any other work he would rather have done. Later two of his children, Tom and Diane, joined him in the oil business also.
Duane loved to entertain and his Fourth of July parties at their home in the country became larger and larger with ice cream and cake, and children shooting all the fireworks they wanted. They enjoyed their second home in Ruidoso, New Mexico, but Duane was always glad to get home to Midland and back to work.
Duane loved to travel in Europe and he and Anne made nine trips, touring Holland, Germany, France and with England and Ireland being special favorites. They always shared these many trips accompanied by friends and family.
Duane's two great passions in life were his family and work, and even after his kids moved away and he had retired, neither were ever very far from him. Throughout his life, Duane loved buying new cars and the companionship of a good dog. He and his last faithful companion Daisy, enjoyed their latest "new" shiny red pickup which they got a heck of deal on!
Survivors include his wife, Anna Beth, daughter Diane Gaston (Lonnie) of Midland, Texas, and two sons Tom Magee (Cindy) of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Jack Magee (Dawn) of Pierre, South Dakota; eight grandchildren, Dawn Germany (Robert), Sarah Gaston, Garrett Gaston, Ryan Magee, Mica Magee, Katie Magee, Danny Magee and Kris Iwan, and two great-grandchildren, Grace and Ada Germany and one great-grandson yet to make his appearance.
