ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Sernelia S. "Sal" Van Der Zwaag, 82, of Orange City passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Orange City Municipal Hospital. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Friday in West lawn Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Sernelia Sophia was born Aug. 3, 1921, in rural Orange City, the daughter of Frank and Johanna (Vander Wilt) Bomgaars. She was raised in Middleburg, Hull and Sioux Center, Iowa, where she graduated from high school. She attended Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, and then was a teacher in country schools in Newkirk and Doon, Iowa, for five years.
On Dec. 22, 1943, she married Elmer Van Der Zwaag in Middleburg. They farmed near Middleburg, where she was a homemaker. In 1979, they moved into Orange City. Mr. Van Der Zwaag passed away Feb. 9, 1995, in Sioux City.
In 1997, she became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home and in the spring of 2002, she transferred to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community, both in Orange City. Since November 2002, she had lived at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, Iowa. She was a member of First Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's organizations and the senior citizens group. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends. She also liked music and was a member of the bell choir at Pleasant Acres. The couple were always supportive of their children and grandchildren, attending all of their activities. Her great-grandchildren called her "Grandma-great."
Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Jurleen and Harlan Koele of Miltona, Minn., Sharon and James Berkenpas of Sioux Center, Iowa, Francine and Leon Mouw of Boyden, Iowa, and JoLynn and Don Van Steenwyk of Milford, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Cristi Koele and Craig Bauerly, Chad and Peggy Koele, Terri Berkenpas and Brad Kingsbury, Curt and Mary Berkenpas, Tricia Berkenpas and Mark Vermeer, Amy Mouw and Matt Stark, Tami Mouw and Dave Lund, Gina Mouw and Beau Wells, Shahna Van Steenwyk and Adam Janssen, and Tara Van Steenwyk and Nathan Odegard; 10 great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Caitlin Bauerly, Hank, Hunter and Hallie Koele, Kassandra and Savana Kingsbury, Tyron, Lucas and Logan Berkenpas, Aftyn and Samantha Vermeer, Benjamin, Brett and Kendra Stark, Brandon, Andrew and Kristina Lund, Emma Sue Wells and Levi Janssen; and two sisters and their husbands, Sophia and Clifford Top of Orange City and Arlene and James Cleveringa of Sheldon, Iowa.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by an infant Koele grandson; and a 2-year-old sister, also named Sernelia.
Memorials are being directed to the Pleasant Acres Care Center.
