Abe Kooiman, 63, dies Friday night
Abe Kooiman was born on January 7, 1897, to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kooiman on a farm near Leota, Minnesota. He spent his boyhood years and attended school in the Leota area. On January 20, 1918, he was married to Martina Mouw, and they spent their entire married life farming in the vicinity of Edgerton and Leota. The deceased succumbed to a heart attack at the Pipestone Hospital on Friday, March 4th, 1960, and had reached the age of 63 years, 1 month, and 26 days.
He leaves to mourn his death his wife, two sons, Peter of Chandler and Glenn at home; four daughters: Mrs. Anthony Sas (Genevieve), Mrs. Arnold Schaap (Mavis) of Leota, Mrs. Willis Beckering (Verla) of Grand Forks, N. D., Ardella, who is a student nurse at the Roseland Community Hospital in Chicago; and 15 grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 brothers, John A. and William P. of Edgerton; and 4 sisters, Mrs. Minnie Eldersveld of Muskegon, Mich., Mrs. Sebia Gulker and Mrs. Margie Zwart of Edgerton, and Miss Jennie Kooiman of Onamia, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Gerrit, Jake, and Herman, and two sisters: Mrs. Allen Gilman (Mary) and Mrs. Bill Ver Hoef (Susie).
He was a member of the Ebenezer Chr. Ref. Church in Leota and was active in many church and community affairs.
Rev. A. Besteman officiated at the funeral services which were held Tuesday, March 8 at the Leota Chr. Ref. Church. Carol Lee Prins was organist, and special music was furnished by a male quartet. Pall bearers included Gary Hofkamp, Wilmar Kruen, Gerrit Gunnink, Joe Eernisse, Simon Prins, and Jonas Koedam. Interment was in the Leota cemetery.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Willis Beckering from Grand Forks, N D.; Ardella Kooiman from Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. John S. De Boer from Miami, Fla.; Mr. and Mrs. T. P. De Young and Jim from South Holland, Ill.; Henry Mouw from Oak Harbor, Wash., and Miss Jennie Kooiman from Onamia, Minn.
Note: Abraham was the brother-in-law of Mrs. John De Boer and Mrs. Ted De Young according to an article, "Attend Funerals", printed on page 1 of the 3/10/1960 Edgerton Enterprise.
