H. T. 'Chief' Barker
H. T. "Chief" Barker, 80, of Sherwood Drive, died Wednesday, April 4,2001, at home.
He was born Aug. 30, 1920, in Horry County, a son of the late K.C. andNeva Harrelson Barker.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Conway and Angler B Sundayschool class.
He became a policeman in 1945 for the City of Conway, chief of police in1946 and retired as chief in 1976.
He was also a salesman for Waccamaw Lumber from 1977-1981. He was pastpresident of North-South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association,past president of S.C. Police Executive Association and a life member ofthe International Association of Chiefs of Police.
He graduated from the FBI National Academy 59th Session in Washington,D.C., and received the policeman of the year award in 1971. He was amember of Woodmen of the World and a member and Master Mason of ConwayLodge No. 65 AFM.
He was a member of the Conway Rotary Club and received the Rotarian ofthe Year in 1977. He received an appreciation award from the ConwayChamber of Commerce for service of years to the city and a distinguishedservice award from the American Legion Post 111 for the year 2000. Healso received a certificate of appreciation from the Crippled Children'sSociety of South Carolina in 1959.
Survivors include a son, Tony Barker and his wife, Faye, of Conway; agrandson, Brent Barker of Conway; two sisters, Christell Inman ofRowland, N.C., and Inez Barker of Loris; and a brother, W. P. Barker ofLoris.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sadie Bell Hardee Barker in 1996.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, ConwayChapel.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Conway.The Revs. Steve Hadden and J. Anderson Bass will officiate. Burial willbe in Hillcrest Cemetery.
