MRS. C. M. DEXTER HAS PASSED AWAY
One of the Original Members of Ladies' Memorial Association
THE USEFUL LIFE OF A NOBLE CHRISTIAN WOMAN
The Funeral This Afternoon Will Be Attended by Patriotic Bodies and Children of the Orphans' Home – Mrs. Dexter Was 78 Years Old
~~Shortly after 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon occurred the death of Mr. Clara Matilda Dexter, one of the oldest and most highly honored citizens of Columbus. Some weeks ago she fell out of her chair and received injuries, which on account of their complications and her enfeebled condition made her death imminent. Since that time at the city hospital, surrounded by loving attention and the best medical skill she grew weaker from day to day. For the past two days she had appeared to sleep without pain, until at last she waked to smile once more upon the watching loved ones and then sweetly swept out into the realms of the great unknown.
~~Mrs. Dexter was born in Columbus, March 1, 1831, the daughter of Elizabeth (DeSassure Smith) and Rev. S. K. Hodges, the latter a faithful and beloved pioneer minister of the Methodist itinerancy. For over seventy-one years she lived in Columbus nursing the even tenor in her way, loving and loved by its people.
~~On February 17, 1853 she married Charles E. Dexter, one of nature's noblemen, a fitting mate for her own beautiful character. This happy wedlock existed till his death on June 6, 1881. Of this union there were two children, R. P. Dexter, now of Montgomery, Ala., and Mrs. Bettie Blake Jordan of blessed memory to hundreds of this city, who were beneficiaries of her Christian heart and holy example.
Possessed of a cheerful disposition, a generous nature, which sufficient material store enabled her to make eminently practical, her life was singularly bright and helpful. Unselfish, thoughtful and optimistic, it was a pleasure to be with her and carry away the fragrant sincerity that time did not chill nor frailty diminish.
A Faithful, Liberal Church Member.
~~She and her husband were devoted Christians, charter members of St. Paul Methodist church of this city, faithful in attendance, and among its most liberal contributors in every good cause. Until her weakness forbade, she was conscientiously faithful in occupying her accustomed place and fulfilling her obligations to that institution.
One of the Original Members of the Memorial Association.
~~As was to be expected of one so capable and willing her counsel and help was sought by every good institution in this city. She was a charter member of the Columbus Ladies' Memorial Association, and at her death was the treasurer of that body so dear to every southerner's heart, having served in that capacity since 1878. For years she had been a liberal supporter and one of the lady managers of the orphan's home. To catalogue her virtues, number of aims (alms?), or weigh her influence, were impossible – in her death thousands shall rise and call her blessed. Old age came upon her like the mellow beauty of autumn, her death was like the softly dying day, and her life was stilled as softly as the touch of the harper's fingers on the strings when the music's done.
~~She is survived by her son, R. P. Dexter, of Montgomery, and her sister, Mrs. W. P. Harrison , of Columbus, and her grandchildren, Mrs. Yarbrough, Miss Ellen Dexter, Charles E., Carnot, and Richard B. Dexter of Montgomery, and Charles F., George D., Edward B. and Misses Clara, Maude, and Bessie D. Jordan of this city.
~~The funeral will take place this afternoon at St. Paul Methodist church at 3 o'clock. Rev. Guyton Fisher officiating. The ladies of the memorial association, the board of managers of the orphans' home, and the children of that institution will attend in body.
Surviving Relatives.
~~Mrs. Dexter is survived by her son, Mr. R. P. Dexter, of Montgomery, her sister, Mrs. W. P. Harrison, of Columbus, and the following grandchildren, Messrs Charles F., George D., Edward B. Jordan, and Misses Clara, Maude, and Bessie D. Jordan all of Columbus, and Mrs. Yarbrough, Miss Ellen Dexter, Charles E., Carnot, and Richard B. Dexter, of Montgomery. Two great-grandchildren, little Seth and Dexter Jordan, of Columbus, also survived her.
Patriotic Bodies to Attend Funeral.
~~The funeral will take placed at 3 o'clock this afternoon from St. Paul Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Guyton Fisher, assisted by the Re. J. P. McFerrin.
The Daughters of the Confederacy are called by the president of Lizzie Rutherford chapter, Miss Anna Caroline Benning, to meet at the church at 3 o'clock this afternoon to attend the funeral in a body, and a similar call is extended to the members of the Ladies' Memorial association by the president of that body, Mrs. Reese Crawford.
The board of managers of the orphans'' home and the children of that institution will also attend the funeral service in a body. Interment will be at Linwood cemetery.
A Patriotic Worker.
~~Mrs. Dexter was one of the leading spirits in the organization of the Ladies' Memorial association, in Columbus in 1866 – the mother of all southern memorial association, and was one of the very few surviving original members of that historic band of noble women. She had served as treasurer of the association for over 30 years, and it is indeed fitting that the patriotic bodies of the city should attend her funeral this afternoon.
