Name: Lewis William Gore Sex: M Birth: 11 JAN 1835 in Shallotte District, Bruswick Co, NC Death: 14 MAY 1927 Note:
Note: All indications are that Lewis' grandfather and great-grandfather were named Joseph.
Family legend is that Lewis left home at age 13-16, with census records showing that he was gone by 1850. The reason was that he did not like his step-mother, who was supposedly from Irish descent.
When Lewis left NC, he went to Mississipi, but he could not have stayed there long for by 1858 he was in Sevier County, Arkansas. It is unknown as to why he went to Mississippi, but family legend has tried to connect Lewis to the family of Senator Thomas Pryor Gore of Oklahoma who was born near Gore Springs in Webster County, Mississippi. Nevertheless, he came to Sevier County in a wagon train with Moses Baker, the father of Marinda Baker Gore. No one knows when he started, but he taught school for a while, possibly prior to the Civil War. Shortly after he married the Civil War began and he served for 4 years. After the Civil War, he practiced medicine as a "country doctor"but had no license and could not charge for his services. Farming was his regular occupation. Finally, he went to Little Rock with enough schooling to get his degree. The Register of Physicians and Surgeons lists Lewis W. Gore of DeQueen as both a physician and surgeon, per the certification of June 30, 1899 and registry date of April 6, 1903. He practiced in those early years with a Dr. Tatum in Lebanon, Arkansas. He moved to Indian Territory in 1903 and could practice 2 years without a license. He practiced with Dr. John Bewley at Peggs,Oklahoma. He started to OKC to obtain his license but decided that he was too old, and did not take the examination. There are 2 Lewis W. Gore's listed in the Arkansas Infantry during the Civil War. The first entry is in Company F of the 6th Arkansas Infantry as a Private coming in and going out. It can be found in the Nat'l Microfilms, Box # 000376, Roll # 0009,Record # 00001937. The second entry is for Company C of the12th Arkansas Infantry as a Private coming in and going out.
