Following is from Dave Johnston ((XXXXX@XXXX.XXX))

"Sarah married John Galloway before 1770 in the Lockwoods Folly region of Brunswick, North Carolina. John was born about 1735. He may have been the son of Thomas Galloway and Ann Winegood who were married at St. Phillips in Charleston, SC on 17 Jun 1733. The records at St. Phillips's in Charleston record the death of Ann Galloway and provide the date 24 Aug 1738 for that event. Any children born to Thomas and Ann Galloway would have had to be born between 17 Jun 1733 and 24 Aug 1738. If the John Galloway who married Sarah Bell was their son then he was likely born in South Carolina. If not the son of Thomas Galloway and Ann Winegood, then he may have been a Scottish immigrant to North Carolina with brothers William and Thomas who all appear in early Brunswick County records.

Brunswick Co., was formed in 1764 from Bladen and New Hanover Counties. The New Hanover County Court Minutes, 1738-1769, C.R. 070.301.1, p. 223 give an accout of minor children of one Thomas Galloway for whom a guardian was court appointed naming Thomas, Catherine, Mathew, and Sarah Galloway, orphans of Thos. Galloway, dec. 6 Sep 1764. Whether this Thomas was John's father, has not been proven. Perhaps John and William were of legal age by 1764 and needed no guardian. No other estate documentation has been found for this earlier Thomas Galloway. Earlier tax records for the town of Wilmington place a Thomas Galloway there in the 1750's.

Another account from Burke's "American Families with British Ancestry", Baltimore, MD, 1983, p. 2697, claims William Galloway of Anne Arundel Co. Md., who died 9 Nov 1743 was the father of John Galloway. One William Galloway of Baltimore Co., Md, did leave a will probated 9 Jun 1743, but that will does not list a son by the name of John. Since the law of Primogeniture was still in effect, he didn't need to mention his eldest son in the will to be valid, assuning John was he eldest, but neither does the will mention sons William or Thomas, believed to be brothers of the John Galloway who married Sarah Bell in Brunswick Co, NC. "

Finally, James Sprunt's "Chronicles of the Cape Fear River", Raleigh, NC, 1914, p. 681, claims that "about the year 1750 (there) emigrated from County Galloway, Scotland two brothers, Samuel and Cornelius Galloway". Sprunt claims that Samuel made his home on Lockwood's Folly River and they these two are the progenitors of the Brunswick Co., Galloway clan. I have been unable to support Mr. Sprunt's claims in my research of the North Carolina Land Grants and extant Brunswick Co., records."
