From: Serena's Family Tree on Rootsweb WorldConnect Serena Steventon ((XXXXX@XXXX.XXX)):
"[Norton Dec 21 2001.FTW] Notes from Godfrey, Early Settlers of Barbour County, Alabama, Southern Heritage Press. William Norton, Jr. along with Stephen Johnson and others, came to Pike County, Alabama about 1826, settling in the section from which Barbour County was formed in 1832. He was joined by his brother John Wesley Norton and his mother Patience Norton about 1830.
My (Serena Steventon) own research shows that: In the 1820 census in Horry County, SC, John and Patience are listed. John is a surveyor in Horry County but disappears from surveying about 1824. In the 1830 census of Alabama, William is listed in Pike County before it was divided. (Pike 007 Southern). Jesse W. Norton and Ayres Norton both also live in Pike County, (Pike 022 Southern for Jesse and Pike 010 Southern for Ayres). These are unknown males to me and don't appear in Godfrey. It could be that Jesse W. is simply a misreading that in the index as Jesse when John is correct. I need to check the handwriting myself. There is also a James Northa (in Pike 062 with no twp) that could be an error in the last name. The listing for Ayres has an asterick that I am unfamiliar with the associate meaning. There is also a Polly Norton listed marrying a Coleman, do not know if she is the same as Mary C. Norton who married a Coleman.
