James G. Fowler in 1850 states he was born in South Carolina. He cannotbe a son of anyone but Richard. James was hired for road work in ColumbusCounty in 1825. The census of 1850 gives us complete information on hisfamily. His wife Edith (nicked named Eddy) was born in 1813 in NorthCarolina, and their children were 1: Josiah Byrd (b. 1831NC); 1f: SarahJ. (b. 1833NC); 2: Edward
(b. 1837NC) 3: William J. (b. 1838NC); 2f: Mary J. ( b. 1839NC); 3f:Edith Caroline (b. 28 Jan 1845 m14 Dec 1866 Frank Norris, ancestor of NCSen R C Soles d. 1913); 4: Alfred S. (b. 1847NC); 4f: Rachel ( b. 1851NCm. Eli Watts son of Eli watts and Viney Ann Hinson); 5: Joan A. (b.1853NC. Lou Floy Milligan of North Carolina is the great granddaughterof Rachel, and gives the additional information that Ned (Edward) lost a leg in the Civil War, and that John A. married 1st Frances Powell and 2ndHenrietta Hinson, while Rachel (b. 1855) married Eli Watts son of EliWatts and Viney Ann Hinson. Josiah, William and James himself also servedin the Civil War, and the latter two died in service by mid-1861. Jameswas listed as James J in the records, but he was the only 54 year oldJames in Columbus County at the time. Edith died before 1870, and Rachelwas living at that time with brother Edward.
The above from the book (A History Of The Fowler Family OF SoutheasternNorth Carolina) by Richard G. Fowler.
From the book compiled by Weymouth T. Jordan, Jr. North Carolina Troops,
1861-1865, Volume VI, page 467, we find:
Fowler, James J., Private
" Born in Columbus County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlistingin Columbus County, at age 54, July 4, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died at Fort Johnston on January 8, 1862, of disease."
In the 1840 Columbus County, census page # 69, James G. Fowler, islisted as head of the following family; 2 males under 5 years of age; 1male of 5 and under 10 years of age; 1 male (himself) of 30 and under 40years of age;
2 females of 5 and under 10 years of age; 1 female of 10 and under 15years of age; 2 females of 15 and under 20 years of age; 1 female(wife) of 20 and under 30 years of age; no slaves.
In the 1850 Columbus County, James G. Fowler, is listed as head ofHousehold # 290, with his wife Edith, and 7 children, he is listed as 52years old (1798).
In the 1860 Columbus County census James is listed as having been bornin North Carolina, the above would seem to agree with that. He is listedas head of family # 890, with his wife Edy, and 4 children, he is listedas a farmer. From the Roster Of Columbus County, NorthCarolina, Confederate Veterans, he served in Company D, 20th Regiment,CSA.
I do not find John G. Fowler, in the 1870 census, Lou Floy WattsMilligan`s research feels that he may have dided in the Civil War.(WSH)
