Caleb and Ann first 11 children were all born in Stratford, CT. (all but one recorded). He was an original settler in Woodbury and had two more children recorded in the Woodbury Church records, but only the youngest after the actual removal of the settlers and church to Woodbury.
Abstract of the will of Caleb Nichols, Sr. of Woodbury, dated 14 Aug 1690, proved 8 Nov 1690:
1st to eldest son Samuel Nichols five shillings beyond what I have given him already.
2nd to my eldest son's child, Josiah Nichols, 10 acres on Grassy Hill in Woodbury.
3rd, all land at Woodbury to be divided in three parts equally and two parts, including the homestead I now live upon, to my wife and son John Nichols, and a third of movables to "my well beloved wife Ann Nicolce" at her own disposal; she shall have the lands while a widow and if not enough for her maintenance, "my son John shall supplye his mother", John to have the two-thirds of lands after his mother's decease, and if she marry again "and bury the husband" and needs to return, John shall receive her and "Let her have which Rooms shee pleaseth in the dwelling house".
4th, to son Caleb the other third part of land at Woodbury.
5th, to son Abraham, 10 acres out of my 32 acres at Coram Hill near Paugasit (Derby), with provisions in case "my wife & childe (John) be drove from Woodbery (in Indian war-fare) & are willing to live at Stratford".
6th, debts to be paid, and I give to "my three daughters Mary, Anna & Pheby" the rest of land and movables; if not enough to make my three daughters' portions half as big as my three sons, the wife and sons to make up the deficit, but if more than enough, the the "over plush" to return to the sons.
7th" I give and bequeath unto my sons in law Moses Wheeler, John Prentis, William Martin five shilling a piece if demanded it being in full of my daughters portions"
Friends Mr. Zachariah Walker, Capt. John Minor and John Sherman to be overseers.
The inventory was sworn to 28 Jan 1690/1 by "Hannah Nicolce the widow Relict of Caleb Nicolce"
A memorandum refers to accomodations (of land) "yt (that) was somtimes Andrue Nicolces", this referring the the son Andrew who had died unmarried before his father, but evidently had reached adult age. (Fairflled Probate, 4:57).
