Notes par Samuel Hickman

NOT PROVEN HE IS THE SON OF JOHN HICKMAN AND ANN WINGATE.

Since the Law of Primogeniture was still in effect he did not have to be mentioned in a will, if he was the eldest son, for the will to be valid.

There are several Samuel Hickman's at that time in that area, which makes it difficult to sort out who belongs to whom. Bear this in mind when reading the following notes.

From Debra Bohon and [Horry County Milligan's.FTW]

Samuel Hickman was on the Muster Roll of Capt. Richard B. Robert of South Carolina Continental Corps of Artillery; Commanded by Col. Owen Roberts; headquarters, Purreysburgh ,March 19, 1799. Samuel enlisted July 3, 1773 and served 3 years

The U.S. Census for 1790 lists a Thomas in the Wilmington District, p. 189 with one male >16 and one < 16, one female. On the same page are two Samuels. One has one male >16 with two females and the other has one male >16, one <16 and three females. These is apparently Samuel Sr. and Jr.

Notes for Samuel Hickman, Sr.:
It is possible that he had brothers named Thomas and William who show on the 1790 and 1800
census as living near by to Saml ( a W.Hickman also in 1810 four pages away in the lists). William
appeared on the 1782 tax list alone, perhaps meaning he was the oldest. Two Williams and one
Saml appear on the 1784 list. Thomas first shows in 1790. Their father could have been John who shows on
the early tax lists of New Hanover and Brunswick from 1755-1772.

1800 census of Brunswick Co (enumerated May, 1801) has Saml & Wm Hickman families on p.20 and they are 26-45 years old as is Thomas Hickman on p.21A. A younger Samuel (16-26) with wife and 4 children is on p. 18.

1810 census of Brunswick County, North Carolina, enumerated Dec. 1810 - p. 222.
Samuel S. Hickman
2 male 0-10; 1 male 10-16;1 male 16-26;1 male 26-45;1 male over 45
1 female 16-26;1 female 26-45;1 female over 45

In the same census a William Hickman in the same age bracket is on p.226. The index for Columbus county has not been checked to date and may reveal another Samuel as Columbus was cut away from Brunswick county in 1808.

Samuel is living next door to H. Millican & the Reynolds and Edward households. The Wards, Russ and McKeithan families not far away.

Extracts from "Brunswick Co, NC Court Minutes, Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, Book I 1782-1786, Book II, 1789-1801"; Thompson, 1992:

The 1820 Brunswick Co census does not show any Hickmans, but there is a Saml Hickman in the Columbus Co index.

1830 census Brunswick Co, Saml (p.319) age 50-60 shows along with the families of Hanson, Isaac (p.318), Benj (p.322) and Harmon (p.323)

1840 census Brunswick Co, NC. has Saml, Edward, Hanson (p.228) and Benj (p.235)
Samuel was in the American Revolutionary War. Samuel was a private, he enlisted July 1778, he served for 3 years. He was in Capt. Richard B. Roberts Company of South Carolina Continental Corps of Artillery.

The parentage of Samuel Hickman is not proven but it may be John Hickman b. ca 1721 New Hanover Co. NC m. Ann Wingate b. ca.1725 New Hanover Co. married abt. 1746. Children of this marriage are John b. ca. 1746 and Edward Hickman b. ca. 1749 New Hanover Co., NC. John Hickman is on the New Hanover Co. tax lists of 1755, 1762 & 1763 and a John Hickman is on the Brunswick C. (formed from New Hanover Co. in 1764) in 1769 and 1772. If these are the same person Samuel Hickman could very well have been born in what was then New Hannover Co and be the son of John and Ann.

Question: John and Edward Hickman where in their grandfather Edward Wingate's will were they received land in Lockwoods Folly, Brunswick Co., NC. No mention was made of Samuel. Was he provided for, as the oldest of the three boys (IF they were brothers) outside the will?

Per Shirley Hickman in a message of 9 Oct 2000:
Believes that Thomas Hickman in the 1790 Brunswick Co, NC census (1- 1-1-0-0) and 1800 Brunswick Co NC census (4-0-0-1-0-1-0-0-1-0) and William Hickman in the 1800 Brunswick Co., NC census (2-1-0-1-0-1-2-0-1-0) could be brothers to Samuel b. 1761, NC. Their children were of the same age. Also they were living close to Samuel: see the following records:
