Source2: Nancy Cox' Report on David Floyd. Born on the old homestead of his father, John Adams, who married Rhoda Kerr Adkins. Her first husband was Anderson Adkins. He was reared and brought up doing the work of an ordinary farm boy. While his opportunities for an education were very meager, he cultivated the habit of study and reading, and soon developed into a leader of thought and action in his neighborhood. In fact, his general information would indicate that he was a college graduate. From middle life until his death, he was considered the best informed man in his community. They were married by Jesse Weeks, a pioneer Methodist preacher.
Soon after his marriage, he purchased some land jointly with his brother, Squire Jack, which adjoined his father's farm. His brother took the southern portion. Here he brought up his children, giving them such educational advantages as the community afforded, and he taught them by example and precept to make good and useful citizens.
He was about six feet tall and weighed around 150 lbs, was straight as a arrow, and walked with careful methodical steps. He had a long tone tohis voice, and was very deliberate and precise in his speech. In his neighborhood and the surrounding county he was know and called BIG JIM. No doubt given him on account of his Uncle Alexander having a son James, called LITTLE JIM. both had a grist mill. Big Jim on the Mill Branch, Little Jim on Fishing Creek.
In politics and religion he was exceedingly strong in his beliefs, and knew well how to maintain an opinion, to defend a party or religious principle. Before the civil War, he was a Whig, and one of the faithful followers of Henry Clay. His opposition to slavery was pronounced, and was a great believer in the teachings of Lloyd Carrison and Wendell Philips. While he took much interest in state and national affairs, yet he was more son in his church. the Christian churches in the north end of Pulaski county and southeast end of Casey County owed much to his efforts. wiht his father, uncles and other relatives this church was organized in his neighborhood and the sourounding parts of the two counties. Many Saturday afternoons he would start walking from his home to Mt. Olive to visit the family of his son-in-law, W.T. Humphrey, and attend preaching Saturday night and Sunday, and he remained faithful as long as he was able to get about. During the last years of his life, he was Superintendent of the Sunday School at New Sardis, and did much to keep the church and Sunday School going.
Everything in his power and at his command was done by him to give his childdren a good education and to bring them up so they would be good citizens. The oldest, Co. silas Adams, in early boyhood gave indication that he was much above the ordinary, and all means were exerted to give this gifted boy a good education to which he took successfully. It was a great source of pride to the father to watch the rise of this son, especially the services rendered to his country during the Civil War, in which he gave a good account of himself on many fields of battle.
Finally the feet of Big Jim began tofalter and his step grew slower, and on Thanksgiving day, 1886, he fell into a last sleep. Burial: Brown Graveyard, Casey Co., KY.
