Dissention arose in the Church between the Massachusetts and Maine party,and Rev. Joseph Emerson left, being a strong adherent of the Mass. party[Ref: Emerson 1898 p24] he favored submission to Mass in 1651/52, and wasevidently a leading man of the Mass party. He signed a petition toCromwell as of Wells asking the protector to confirm the jurisdiction ofMass over the inhabitants of Wells. In this petition, which he probablywrote, the people of Wells refer Cromwell to their pyous and reverendfriend, Mr. John Wheelwright, sometime of us, now in England, for anydesired information as to their condition or character. He soon lost hishold on the affections of the people of Wells, largely, perhaps, becuaseof the political dissensions which disturbed the church [Ref: Emerson1900 p33]
After leaving Wells in 1664, went as first minister to Milton, MA [Ref:Emerson 1898 p24] after he left the church at Wells is said to havedwindled to two families, and they quarrelled. Orders came from the Massgovernment that the church disband. Orders quickly followed that the townbe indicted for not maintaining public worship [Ref: Emerson 1900 p34]
Resided York ME, Milton MA, and Mendon MA [Ref: Walters v15p98]
Dec 1 1669 settled "through the interest of the Bulkeleys" as minister ofMendon, at a salary of #45 and various contributions [Ref: Emerson 1898p24]
Remained minister at Mendon until the town was partially destroyed byIndians, then retired to Concord. [Ref: Emerson 1898 p24]
died intestate; inventory of goods dated Oct 1680; includes severalparcels of land in Mendon, books to the value of 18#, plate 10#, andmaking a total after paying debts of 129#7. [Ref: Emerson 1898 p24]
