DAVID STEWART, known as the "STEWARD OF SCOTLAND," 1st son and heirapparent of ROBERT III [SCT], by Annabella, daughter of John DRUMMOND, ofStobhall, was born 1378, and was, on or soon after his father's accessionto the throne, 19 April 1370, recognised as EARL OF CARRICK [SCT]. He wascreated 28 April 1398 DUKE OF ROTHESAY [SCT] in the isle of Bute in aCouncil held at Scone, his uncle Robert being advanced to the Dukedom ofAlbany [SCT] at the same time, these two being the first Dukes ever madein Scotland. He was, a few months later on, created, 6 September 1398,EARL OF ATHOLL [SCT].
He married, in February 1399/1400, at Bothwell Church, Marjory, 1stdaughter of Archibald (DOUGLAS), EARL OF DOUGLAS, (called "The Grim"), byJoan, only child and heir of Maurice [MORAY], Earl of Strathearn [SCT].He died v.p. and s.p. 26 March 1402, aged 24, in Falkland Castle, whenunder the custody of his uncle Robert, Duke of Albany, probably ofdysentery, but not without suspicion of foul play, when his peeragedignities reverted to the Crown. He was buried in Lindores Abbey. Hiswidow married in 1403 Sir Walter HALYBURTON, the younger of Dirletoun,and died in 1421, before 11 May. Walter died in 1447.
