JOHN FITZ ROBERT of Costessey Norfolk, afterwards DE CLAVERING (whichname he assumed), son and heir, aged 44 at the time of his father'sdeath, distinguished himself in the French and Scottish wars. He wasexcused 14 June 1294 from attendance on the King in Gascony. He hadlivery of his father's lands 29 May 1310. He was summoned to Parliamentfrom 16 July 1299 to 20 November 1331, by writs directed Johanni deClavering, whereby he is held to have become LORD CLAVERING. Subject tohis own life (and in the case of the Lordship of Clavering to that of hisbrother Edmund Clavering) he alienated nearly all the estates of thefamily.
He married, in 1278 (he aged 12, she under 13), Hawise, daughter ofRobert DE TIBETOT. He died s.p.m. in 1331/2, before 23 January, atAynhoe, Northants, and was buried at Langley, Norfolk, when WarkworthCastle and his other lands in Northumberland, passed by grant (1328) ofthe King to Henry DE PERCY [2nd LORD PERCY]. After this date no one wasever summoned to Parliament in right of any Barony which may be held tohave been created by any of the above writs. His widow died 1345, before14 April. John, 2nd baron, who assumed, by the king's appointment, the surname ofClavering, had summons to parliament from 10 April, 1299, to 20 November,1331. This nobleman had distinguished himself, in his father's lifetime,in the French and Scotch wars, and was taken prisoner at the battle ofStrivelyn. His lordship m. Hawyse, dau. of Robert de Tibetot, and had anonly dau., Eve, who m. 1st, Ralph de Ufford, 2ndly, Thomas de Audley, and3rdly, Robert Benhale. Lord Clavering, long before his death, beingdoubtful of having male issue, made a feoffment to Stephen de Traffordwhereby he vested the inheritance of his castle and manor of Warkworth inthe said Stephen, with other manors, for the intent that he shouldreconvey them to his lordship for life, with remainder to the king andhis heirs. In consideration whereof the king granted unto the baron andhis heirs divers lands and hereditaments, then valued at £400 per annum.His lordship d. at his manor of Aynho, in Northamptonshire, in 1332, whenthose great estates, falling to the crown, were divided thus-- Warkworth,and the manors in Northumberland, granted to Henry de Perci, are stillpart of the possessions of the ducal family of Northumberland; Aynho andHorsford, in Northamptonshire and Norfolk, to Ralph de Neville, and hisheirs; Clavering, in Essex, to the deceased lord's brother Edmund, forlife, and in remainder to the above Ralph Neville and his heirs. In thisvery unjustifiable manner were the descendants of his lordship's youngestbrother deprived of their fair inheritance.
