JOHN DE NEVILLE, son and heir by 1st wife. In 1234, before his father'sdeath, he fined to have the bailiwick of the King's Forest in Oxon,Northants, Bucks, and Hunts for life, and, after his father's death, didhomage, 21 July. On 21 October 1235 he was appointed Chief Forester andjustice of the whole of the King's Forest through England. He was one ofthe English notables who sailed with Richard, Earl of Cornwall, forPalestine from Marseilles in 1240. After his return to England he was sorapacious and oppressive in the execution of his office that, uponevidence obtained by commission, he escaped prison only by a very heavyfine. He retired in disgrace to Wethersfield, where he died soonafterwards.
He married Hawise, daughter of Sir Robert DE COURTENAY, of Okehampton,Devon. He died shortly before 8 June 1246. His widow had writ for dower22 August 1246, and married, 2ndly, as his 2nd wife, Sir John DEGATESDEN, who died before 17 October 1262.
