Martha Lee Snead 'Bitsy' MONROE -- Martha Sneed, a native and longtime resident of Monroe, passed over to God's heavenly kingdom on February 19, 2011. Bitsy was born on September 25, 1928, daughter of the late Eugene and Patricia Hood Lee. She was known for her vivacious, determined, intelligent and humorous spirit. She was a great lover of jazz music, especially jazz piano. She was a jazz singer for a short period in her early adulthood and sang in several performances with Loonis McGlohon and his band. Music could always be heard when family and friends were at the home of Bitsy and her loving, devoted husband of 40 years, John 'Gil' Snuggs. Bitsy reveled in the beauty and solitude of nature surrounding her and Gil's home on Lake Monroe, and she had a passion for birds and flowers, especially the owls that nest every year in the woods around their home. She had a love for all of God's creatures, especially dogs. She loved to read and she was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Monroe from an early age. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Monroe High School, she was a graduate of The Woman's College of The University of North Carolina, and she had a successful career in real estate for many years. Bitsy and Gil shared a deep love for each other, for family, and for the gatherings at their home that included Bitsy's three sons, their wives and her eight grandchildren. The family gatherings, more than anything, were loved for the rich supply of laughter, humor, and zany behavior. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011, at 11:00 AM, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 116 S. Church St., Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends following the service. Bitsy is survived by her husband Gil Snuggs; her three sons Herndon Hasty and wife Lee of Overland Park, KS, Haydn Hasty and wife Terry of Asheville, NC, Lee Hasty and wife Kathy of Monroe, NC; and her eight grandchildren - Haydn Hasty, Jr. and Haley Laseur; Katie and Herndon Hasty, Jr., Ashli and Ryan Hasty; Courtney Mabe and Noah Hasty; and her sister, Patricia Lee 'Teka' Mitchum of Matthews, NC. Her family is happy that she now rests in the peace that passes all understanding. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 293, Monroe, NC 28111 or to the Humane Society of Union County, P. O. Box 101, Monroe, NC 28111. Online condolences may be made to www.gordonfuneralservice.com.
