On this Twentieth day of March 1833 Personaly appeared in open court for the Honorable Josiah J. Evans in the Court of
Sessions & common pleas - for said District and State aforesaid now siting: Mj'r. Thomas Henderson a resident of
Pickens District and the aforesaid. Aged - Seventy years, who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath
make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 - that he
entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. That he
entered the Service in York Dist. As a volunteer under Capt. Robert Thompson and marched to Cataba river was at the
defeat of Col. Cary Capt. Thompson then deserted. He the said Thomas Henderson then rec'd. a Lieutenants
Commission signed by Col. William Bratton and was under Capt. John Cunningham and marched to the Hanging Rock
battle. Commanded as Lieutenant and fought in that battle. Likewise commanded as Lieutenant at Sumpters defeat
there lost his horse with all the trapings. That he was detached by Genl. Sumpter to go under the command of Col.
Wade Hampton to drive a party of the British from the Quarter houses. That he was in the Service for about three
years except about one month on ______? Furlough ____? Suffered a great deal of privation and hardship. Was in a
number of skirmishes but cannot recall all, the particulars. That he was at one time under the command of Col. James
Hawthorn rendering services in the Dutch fork.
Was considerably in service after the defeat of Lord Cornwallace in keeping the Tories in subjection. That there was
thirty four pounds sixteen shillings and four pence of his pay which he was never rec'd in kind. That he hereby
relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except this for this ____? And declares that his name is not on
the Pension roll of the agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the designated year aforesaid in open court.

Deportment. This deponant sayeth 1th. I was born in Lincoln county, North Carolina in the year 1762 ---

2d. I have it on record taken from my Father's Family Bible.

3d. In York District, South Carolina and removed from there in 1788 to my present residence in Pickens Dist. , South
Carolina and have remained on the same plantation to the present time.

4th. I entered the service a volunteer in the lighthorse and continued as fact.

5th. I recollect Col. Washington and Col. Lee of the Horse Service. Was my self a Lieutenant under Col. William Brattan
and Genl. Thomas Sumpter.

6th. I did receive a Lieutenants commission in the year 1780. Signed by Col. William Brattan which I retained until I
removed from York Dist. In the year 1788 and then lost my pocketbook and my commission in it.

7th. Mj'r. Andw. Hamilton Doctor John Robinson Capt. James Henderson, Edward Norton Esqr. And a number of others
I believe want testify as my veracityand their belief of my services as a soldier in the revolution. Sworn to and
subscribed the day and year aforesaid in open court.

We James Douthit a clergyman residing in Anderson District South Carolina and Edward Norton residing in Pickens Dist.
Hereby certify that we are all acquainted with Mjr. Thomas Henderson who has subscribed and swown to the above
declaration that we believe him to be of the age therein stated that he is reputed and believed in the neighbourhood
where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and we concur in that opinion.

Dear Sir:

Reference is made to your request for the Revolutionary War record of Thomas Henderson of South Carolina.

The data furnished herein were obtained from the papers on file in pension claim, W.10102, based upon the
Revolutionary War service of Thomas Henderson.

He was born February 27, 1762 in Lincoln County, North Carolina; the names of his parents are not given.

Thomas Henderson, while residing in York District, South Carolina, enlisted in July, 1780 and served ten days
as a private under Captain Robert Thompson, and was in the "Colonel Carey Defeat"' soon after which he was
appointed first lieutenant and continued to serve in the South Carolina troops, under Captains John Cunningham,
Benjamin Garrison, John Chambers, John Henderson, Colonels William Bratton, Wade Hampton,
Lacy, James Hawthorne, Thomas Neel, and Thomas Brandon. He was in the battles of Hanging Rock, Sumters' Defeat,
Gates' Defeat, Kings Mountain, Blackstocks, and Cowpens, length of service as lieutenant, two years.

Thomas Henderson was allowed pension on his application executed March 20, 1833, then a resident of
Pickens District, South Carolina.

Thomas Henderson died May 20, 1841 in Pickens District.

The application for headstone for Thomas Henderson is herewith. There was no correspondence attached.
