L. R. Chelf Buried Wednesday
Had Been Postmaster and Merchant at Knifley for Number of Years
L. R. Chelf, 63, merchant and postmaster for a number of years at Knifley died at Campbellsville Monday morning. The death of Mr. Chelf was unexpected as he had started to Louisville. Shortly after breakfast he laid down to rest and in a few minutes was found in a serious condition.
He was one of the best known men in this section, his business interests necessitating a wide acquaintance, and he was universally liked by all with whom he came in contact.
His wife died a number of years ago, but he is survived by six daughters and three sons as follows: Mrs. W. O. Beard, Campbellsville; Mrs. Wallace Knifley at Knifley; Mrs. E. P. Waggener and Mrs. Charlie Coolie, this city, and Misses Hazel and Ruby Chelf, of Knifley; Marshall Chelf, of Knifley; James Chelf, of Louisville, and Paul Chelf, a member of the Citizens Conservation Corps at Mammoth Cave.
Funeral Services were held at the Knifley Christian Church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. P. Gast, and interment was at Brookside Cemetary Campbellsville.
The obituary ran in The Adair County News. A few more mentions of Chelf turn up in newspaper transcriptions from the late 1800's: Adair County News December 1, 1897, and Adair County News January, 12, 1898, both collected by Laura Frost Wright.
