BORGER - Callie Mae Gunter Combest, 88, formerly of Panhandle, died Monday, July 5, 2010.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Llano Cemetery. Services will be at 3 p.m. in First Baptist Church in Borger by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Coulter Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St.
Ms. Callie Gunter was born May 1, 1922, in Shamrock. Her parents were Carey and Boone Gunter. She attended a one-room school in Elida, N.M., then moved to Bushland and Clarendon. She graduated from Clarendon Junior College and West State University in 1942.
She taught school in Goodnight, Groom, Tulia and Panhandle. The junior high school parents in Tulia loved Ms. Gunter so much they persuaded the administration to continue moving her up by grade level with their children. When the eighth-grade class had their 50th reunion, they honored and invited Ms. Gunter to celebrate as their favorite teacher.
Callie married L. Nelson Combest in 1956, in Memphis and adopted his son, Larry Combest. They moved to a farm three miles north of Panhandle in 1959.
She was active in First Baptist Church as a leader in Sunday school, WMU, GA's and choir. She could hear the alto harmony to any song and sang in a trio with Doris WIlkins and Genie Murray.
She was a member of the Altruim Club. She was an avid golfer and an amazing seamstress and loved handiwork.
She came to faith in Christ in Bushland in the chicken coop as she and her mom gathered eggs and was baptized in the creek north of Bushland. She moved to Amarillo in 1997 and then to Borger in 2002.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson; her beloved sister, Lorene Gunter; a brother, W.C. Gunter; a granddaughter, Tonya Combest; and Belle.
Survivors include her daughter, Rene Brain and husband Jeff of Borger; a son, Larry Combest and wife Sharon of Lubbock; two granddaughters, Alisha Brain and Ashley Brain, both of Flower Mound; her brother, Uil Gunter and wife Fern of Olton, Marge Culwell of Amarillo; a grandson, Haydn Combest; a great-granddaughter, Mikala; several special cousins, nieces, nephews and her special friends, Cari, Katie, Fannie, Donna, Gracie, Sylvia, Ko and Wayne, as well as her precious nurses, Melissa, Tina, Cathy and friends at Odyssey Health Care.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Another Chance House, 207 S. Van Buren St., Amarillo, TX 79101; or Odyssey Healthcare, 6900 W. Interstate 40, Suite 150, Amarillo, TX 79106.
