HOLDERS OF THE HONOUR OF CLARE (XII)
ELIZABETH suo jure COUNTESS OF ULSTER [IRL], Lady of Clare, &C.,granddaughter and heir, being only daughter and heir of William (DEBURGH), EARL OF ULSTER [IRL], son and heir apparent Elizabeth, Lady ofClare (by her 1st husband), which William (though heir to his father andgrandfather) died v.m., 6 June 1333. She, who was born 6 July 1332,married 9 September 1342, when aged 10, LIONEL, 3rd son of EDWARD III,who in her right became EARL OF ULSTER [IRL], and who, after hersuccession to the honour of Clare, was, 13 November 1362, created DUKE OFCLARENCE. EARLDOM OF ULSTER [IRL] (V, 4)
ELIZABETH, apparently suo jure COUNTESS OF ULSTER [IRL], only daughterand heir (it is presumed) to her father's Earldom of Ulster, theremainder to which is not known, was born 6 July 1332. At the age of 10she married, 15 August or 9 September 1342, at the Tower of London,Lionel, styled "of Antwerp," then aged 3, 3rd but 2nd surviving son ofEDWARD III, by Philippe, daughter of William, COUNT OF HOLLAND ANDHAINAULT. He, who was recognized as EARL OF ULSTER [IRL], apparently jureuxoris, before 26 January 1346/7, was Viceroy of Ireland, 1361-67. He wascreated, 13 November 1362, DUKE OF CLARENCE. Elizabeth died s.p.m. in1363 in Dublin, and was buried at Clare Priory, Suffolk. Lionel dieds.p.m. 17 October 1368 at Alba (Longuevil), in Piedmont, and was buriedat Pavia, but later his body was removed to England and buried at ClarePriory.
