Charles Calvin Watson Sr.
Charles Calvin Watson, Sr., 84, died Saturday, Feb. 16 at St. Josephs
Hospital. He was born in Alexandria, Alabama and had lived in Savanna
h since 1969, having moved from N. C. Mr. Watson was drafted in the Ar
my in 1941, but volunteered for the Army Air Corps. He served with th
e 450th Bomb Squadron (B-26 MediumBombers) in the European Theater, t
aking part in operations in Holland, France and Germany throughout th
e war. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and numerous othe
r citations and awards. Served in the Berlin airlift, operations in Ko
rea, Japan, Southeast Asia, as well as the Cuban Missile Crisis.He re
tired in 1963 after over 20 years of service. After retirement he taug
ht Electrical Technology in the Community College system of N. C. and
then moved to Savannah in 1969 to teach at Savannah Technical College
for over 15 years. Mr. Watson was an active member of White Bluff Pres
byterian Church, Menof the Church, formerly a member of the Sessions
and a Deacon of the Church.He was an active member of the 450th Bomb
Squadron Association, 8th Air Force Historical Society and the 8th Ai
r Force Heritage Center. While Wing Commander of the local chapter of
the 8th AFHS, he organized the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the fou
nding of the 8th Air Force in Savannah, which was instrumental in brin
ging the 8th Air Force Heritage Center to the area. Survivors:wife o
f 55 years, Charlotte Mae Sykes Watson of Savannah; sons, Charles Calv
in Watson, Jr. of Savannah and Harry Russell Pierson of Birmingham, AL
; daughter, Patricia Alice Watson of Atlanta; brothers, Robert Watson
of St. Louis,MO, David Watson of Suffolk, VA and Jimmy Watson of AL;
sisters, Mary W. Armstrong of Little Rock, AR and Sister Marie of Lafa
yette, LA; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several n
ieces and nephews. Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p. m. Monday at the Hubert C
