To Tamera Caine:Greetings,The Anna Jury Combest, father of John Combest born on December 24, 1715 in Baltimore County, Maryland, is Keturah Combest born on October 10, 1695, Baltimore County, Maryland. She is named as issue of John Combest who died prior to August 3, 1710 and who was in Baltimore County, Maryland by 1692 as a taxable in Spesutia Hundred. On August 3, 1710 George Wells posted administration bond with Jonathan Massey and William Lennox. The estate was inventoried on August 27, 1710 by Roger Matthews and Jos'h Johnson and valued at 26.3.11 pounds. This John Combest had issue: Sarah Combest, born January 17, 1693;, who married William Robinson on December 8, 1713; Keturah Combest, born October 10, 1695; Mary Combest, born on April 20, 1698; and Martha Combest, born on September 98, 1700.Keturah was not married when John was born on December 24, 1715 and in June of 1716 when she was fined by the Court. Her sister Martha Combest received a similar fine in March of 1718/19 when Jacob Combest was born on November 10, 1718. She would not name the father.Early Baltimore County was settled probably from the south of Maryland The "Hundred" where John Combest lived was called Spesutia Hundred. It was named for Nathaniel Utie who was one of the first white settlers to have repeated contacts with the Susquehannough Indians. In the later half of the 1650's Utie claimed an island off of the present day shores of the Aberdeen Proving Grounds and named it Spesutia, meaning Utie's refuge. Utie owned other parcels of land along the Gunpower and Sassafras Rivers and commanded a force of nearly 60 men on his island. It is there where we find John Combest by 1692 and found on the lists of taxables for the remainder of his life. It is there where Keturah "Anna Jury" Combest was probably born.I am researching the "Roots of Samuel Combest who married Sarah Dick in South Carolina and moved to Pulaski County Kentucky where they raised their children and died. Samuel and Sarah "Sallie are buried in Old Sardis Cemetery, north of Sommersett, Pulaski County, Kentucky. Samuel's father was John Combest and his mother is Ann Kennedy. I am still unable to connect Samuel Combest's father John Combest with a lineage.Do you descend from this John Combest, son of Keturah "Anna Jury" Combest?Incidently, this John Combes is probably the John who married Mary Bowley on February 25, 1741 and had issue Thomas Combest born on June 13, 1742.Combest Sources: BALTIMORE COUNTY FAMILIES, 1659-1759, by Robert W. Barnes, page 127, available at Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois Call Number F187 .B2 B322 1989.See also: BALTIMORE COUNTY MARYLAND TAX LIST 1699-1706, compiled by Raymond Clark, (1964), available at Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois Call Number E 69054.06 It lists John Combest the father of Katurah Combest in the lists of taxables for Spesutia. The descendants of Samuel Combest may be found in SAMUEL COMBEST AND HIS DESCENDANTS, by Jane Barnes Smith and Patricia Osborn Olmstead, ca 1989, privately printed and available at major genealogy libraries. An additional resource for Combest research is JOHN COMBEST AND HIS DESCENDANTS, by Lerlene Rowell Covington, 1987, which lists the early Combest references in records, but does not establish the parents of this John Combest, the father of Samuel Combest. My line of descent from Samuel Combest and Sarah "Sallie" Dick is: Mary "Polly Combest who married Levi Osborn son of Elijah Osborn and Mary Warren and moved to Montgomery County Illinois; James Riley Osborn son of Levi who married Margaret Louisa Eppes; James Madison Osborn, who married Nellie Belle Wiley. Their son James M. Osborn was my father.I hope that this helps you and encourages more Combest input to this site.My land address is Jim Osborne, 5601 W. Berenice, Chicago, Illinois 60634. I may be contacted VIA my sister's e-mail address (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX) Please note that only messages with a genealogy listing are opened since there are about 125 unwanted e-mails per day.Best Wishes and good luck in your search.Jim Osborne
