Notes par Edward Stratton III

Edward III was the only son of Edward Jr. and was less than 19 years of age when his father died, but he had five sisters. By his fathers will he was given al l the land that his father died "possessed with." Sometime between 1703 and 170 8 he married Anne Batte, dayghter of Henry Batte of Prince George County. From her father's estate she inherited 250 acres of land in Bristol Parrish, Prince George County. In 1708 and 1717, Edward and wife Anne sold parts of their estat e at Bermuda Hundred. They were still living there in Jun., 1719 and after whic h nothing has been found concerning him. It is not known at what date he died; but in 1749, his widow Anne Stratton, made a deed conveying to her son William Stratton land on the south side of the James River "where the said Anne now dwe lleth," and that is the latest mention of her. This land conveyed to William s eems to have been part of the land which had belonged to the first Edward Strat ton in 1686,- the old Stratton homestead in Henrico (now Chesterfield) Co. It p robably passed out of the hans of the Strattons in the fourth generation. Edwar d had two children and it is not unlikely that there were other children. How l ong William possessed the land conveyed to him by his mother is not known. Upda te: The following deed recently discovered among unindexed papers at Richmond p roves that Edward Stratton III of Bermuda Hundred, Virginia had a son Harry as well as the two other sons Thomas and William. He may have had one other son, J ohn not mentioned in his will. His will as follows:
Know all men by these pr esents, I, Edward Stratton of this parish County of Henrico, for and in conside ration of the love and natural affection which I have to and for my son, Thomas Stratton, do freely and willingly give and grant unto my said son, Thomas Stra tton, one tract and paecel of land situated in the County and parish aforesaid it being that land and plantation which I peuchased of William Parker together with all the land in that tract and all houses and improvements of what nature or kind soever, the place being called and known by the name of Bakers unto him my said son, Thomas Stratton and his heirs forever but if he dies without issu e lawfully begotten, then I give the aforesaid land and premises with the appur tenances unto my son Henry Stratton and his heirs forever.
In witness and te stimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this day 1729.
