John Estes enlisted in Halifax County, VA on 9 Feb 1776 for 2years.
Thomas, his brother, enlisted at the same time. They went home to
Virginia for Christmas on 25 Dec 1776 to see family and friends and took
back Abraham, their other brother to join the war. They fought beside
General George Washington during the battle of the crossing and spent the
winter at Valley Forge. After serving his time he was honorably
discharged in March 1778and went back to Halifax County, VA. In 1781 he
moved to Washington County,NC with a group of other Estes familes and
friends to have their new land.John Estes Sr., Thomas Estes, and
cousin George Estes headed the move and formed a community in 1782 in
Franklin (the Lost State) and then bought land from North Carolina in
1789 which later became Grainger County, TN.
In 1799John Estes Sr. was a member of the Third General Assembly
(Legislature) for Grainger County that met in Knoxville, the capital at
that time, on September16, 1799.
Grainger County Tennessee was established by the first Legislatureon
April 22, 1796. Austin P. Foster wrote in his "Counties of Tennessee"
pamplet: "The county seat was not located until 1801 when the courthouse
waserected. But the county court was organized on June 13, 1796 (less
than twomonths after the county was created) at the house of Benjamin
McCarty, with the following named magistrates appointed by Governor
Sevier: Thomas Henderson, Elijah Chisum, James Blair, John Estes, Phelps
Read, Benjamin McCarty, James Moore, John Bowen, John Kidwell, John
Sims, William Thompson and Major Lea."
Children are not proven but are found in the same area of Grainger County
Tennessee, on tax records and marriage licenses and are of the correct
age.
