Died January 5, 2005, in Northfield, Rice County, Minnesota. Mary was married to the Rev. Nels F. Mattson on June 6, 1940, in Duluth, Minn. She served with her husband in the music programs and Christian education programs in the various churches he served in Bruno, Minn.; Clear Lake, Wis.; Pioneer, Calif.; Castro Valley, Calif.; and Oakland, Calif. She had a gift of hospitality and making parishioners feel welcome. Their home was often the hub of many church-related activities and dinners. Nels died in 1988 and Mary took up residence in Orinda until she married Earl L. Lund of Clarkfield, Minn., in 1993. Earl died in 2001. Mary was known for her friendliness, ready smile, encouraging words, the ability to converse with anyone, compassion for underprivileged children, being an amusing mimic, and her legendary humor. Funeral services were held in Clarkfield, Minn., at the church she attended as a child. The officiating pastor remarked he had never conducted a funeral lasting so long, so meaningful, and "so much fun," befitting the Mary they all knew.
