Greenville attorney and community leader James B. Pressly Jr. died Sunday. He was 58.
"Jim was an outstanding lawyer and community leader," said Mayor Knox White, a partner with Pressly at Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd. "This is a great shock to all who knew and loved him."

Pressly, who represented The Greenville News, specialized in asbestos litigation, trying cases from Alabama to the Virgin Islands.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete, said Jerry Sizemore, funeral director for The Mackey Mortuary Funerals and Cremations.

Dewey Oxner, a partner in the law firm, said he had known Pressly since he started practicing law and tried several asbestos cases with him. Pressly, whose father was a doctor, brought much medical knowledge to the courtroom, he said.

"He was excellent in that field of asbestos litigation," Oxner said.

He also tried environmental and contract cases in federal and state court. His clients included Dana Corp., Daniel International, Union Carbide and Uniroyal.

Pressly, who served as vice president of the Cotillion Club, worked with Christ Church Episcopal School, Oxner said. At one point, he was a managing partner of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, he said.

Joseph Blake Jr., a partner in the firm, said Pressly also was involved in United Way and the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce, overseeing a leadership program.

"He was a terrific friend and a good lawyer, " Blake said.

Pressly also was the state chairman of the South Carolina Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1971 and received a bachelor of arts from Vanderbilt University in 1968.
