Christopher C. Dick (1851-1931)1851 - 1920 , Oklahoma Territory
This story was copied from Genealogy and History of our Ancestors in America, Bowen, Wilfred and Mercedes, 1984.
William Spears Dick and Charlottie Davenport were married Nov. 4, 1840 and to this union 14 children were born. Christopher Columbus was the sixth child born to this union. He was born March 8, 1851 in Kansas.
He was married to Sarah Dean Smith in Douglas County. They started housekeeping in a dugout near Rock, and 5 children were born to this couple. Walter, Ellis, Edna, Curtis, (Better nown as Bird), and Howard. This was my Father.
This couple, with their 5 children, all being born in the dugout decided when they heard of a new frontier being opened known as the Oklahoma Territory. They loaded all their possessions and their 5 children in a covered wagon and headed for the new country to make a new life for their family. My father was 5 years old. He was born Feb. 17, 1884.
In the spring of 1889 with the usual hardships they homesteaded on S.E. 4-32-19N-2W I.M. one-half mile north and one mile west of Mulhall, then known as Alfred.
Grandpa was among the more fortunate. He homesteaded 160 acres and again had to make shelter for his family. So another dugout was built.
As soon as he could, he built a 1 room frame house and moved his little family into a real home. The one room still stands. Although in later years a two store house was built. The big house has now been torn down but the one little room still stands.
Grandpa had a chance to trade this farm for one he thought better, so the transaction was made. The new farm was one mile west and one mile north of the homestead.
Two more children were added to this family. Bessie was born in 1891 and Zetta in 1893.
Grandma was a frail little woman and suffered from asthma. She smoked a pipe. She thought this helped her breathing. She died in 1902 and grandpa had her body shipped back to Rock, Kansas for burial.
We have visited her grave several time and also the farm where the family lived and the dugout is still there.
Since Grandpa was left with a family and a widow, whose husband had died lived on the adjoining farm who was left with a family, they deicded to get married and he moved to her farm. The widow was Cleopatrick Harris, mother of Iloh Anthis and William Harris. Grandpa sold his farm and they lived on her farm until Grandpa died in 1932.
Sincere there was no neighbors close and telephonese were very scarce, they had an old fashioned dinner bell. It was a known fact in the neighborhood that grandpa's bell was not to be rung unless they needed help. So the night my grandpa died, grandma rung the bell. She started ringing it at 2 a.m. but since it was March everyone had their windows closed and no one heard the bell until 6 a.m. when Mel Dunn who lived 2 1/2 miles away heard the bell and came to her rescue.
Walter lived in Colorado, Ellis in Tishomingo, a friend and neighbor to Bill Murray. Bird in Kansas, later moved to Mulhall, he served in World War 1. Howard, my father, lived in Logan County, Bessie married Ora Murphy and lived in Logan County all their lives. Bessie and Ora both died in 1975 and Zetta Married Charley Hanson and lived on a farm N.W. of Mulhall until Charley died in 1932. She then married albert Jones and they made their home in Portland, Ore. until they both died. Edna lived in Medford, Ore all her married life.
My father lived and armed near Mulhall until he retiredin 1950 and moved into town. He passed away Feb. 21, 1960.
He and Georgia Willford were married Jan. 1, 1908 at her home northwest of Mulhall and they stared housekeeping on a farm near Hayward. They were blessed with five Children. Eva Nadine was born on this farm in 1909. They moved to a farm in the Hubble Community and their second child was born, William Floyd in 1910.
This couple with their two small children decided to go to California. It was there my father was a street car operator in San Francisco. They weather didn't agree with Floyd so they moved back to Okla. and moved on my grandpap Willford's farm northwest of Mulhall. Three more children were added to the family. Frances Neoma was born in 1916, Charlottie Verlene in 1920 and Clifford Tillman in 1925.
We lived 2 miles from Pleasant View school and as our winters were hard, we drove a pony to a buggy and went to school Our pony's name was Mary Mae. She was a faithful pony and very trustworthy. She knew the way to and from school without us kids driving her.
My father attended Lone Star School west of Mulhall. My mother attended Pleasant Valley School Northwest of Mulhall.
In those days there weren't many country churches and transportation was poor. We couldn't go into town for church, so the schoolhouse served as a church.
Our family attended Sunday school and church at the Pleasant View School house for years. My father was Sunday School Supt. for several years.
I can remember the pot luck dinners. After church the men would place long boards on top of the school desks and the ladies would put the food on the makeshift tables. It was an enjoyable time. In those days there was a family living on every 160 acre farm.
There was always a large attendance at all community activities.
