Richard L. Murphy, 70, of 658 Zion Church Road, Orangeburg, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Oliver Joe Murphy officiating. Burial will be in St. George Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors, directed by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg.
Active pallbearers will be David Cowan, James Edgemon, Buck Gray, Harold Hughes, Marvin Kittrell and Joe Murphy.
Mr. Murphy was born Sept. 12, 1938, in Daytona Beach, Fla., the son of the late Lezo Murphy and the late Valerie Kittrell Murphy. He served in the U.S. Navy and for much of his life was self-employed. Mr. Murphy loved people and was an avid outdoorsman. He was preceded in death by a brother, J.D. Murphy, and a sister, Geraldine Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Hughes Murphy of the home; a son, Richard L. Murphy Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Seneca; a daughter, Robyn Murphy Heaton of Orangeburg; two grandsons, Roger Scott Heaton Jr. of Orangeburg and Jackson Lee Murphy of Seneca.
Friends may call at the funeral home.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of TRMC, P.O. Box 2352, Orangeburg, SC 29116 or to the H.F. Mabry Center for Cancer Care, 1161 Cook Road, Orangeburg, SC 29118.
