From the News Reporter Sam T. Gore WHITEVILLE – Sam T. Gore, 87, of Whiteville, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the Duke Medical Center. He as the son of the late Sam. T. Gore, Sr. and Ruth Cox Gore and was preceded in death by his wife Thelma Gordon Gore. Mr. Gore owned and Operated Gore's Quality Shop in Whiteville for 37 years and Gores Gifts and Jewelry in Wilmington for 18 years. He served as President of Columbus Telecom for 5 Years; President of Sam. T. Gore and Associates Real Estate for 10 years; Past President of Whiteville Chamber of Commerce and Whiteville Lions Club. In 1997 he was the Man of the Year with the Whiteville Community Harvest Day festival; in 1999 he was recognized as Citizen of the Year with Whiteville Lions Club; member of the Whiteville United Methodist Church where he served as Past Chairman of the Official Board of Whiteville United Methodist Church, he was also elected two terms to Whiteville City Council; one term as Mayor Pro Tem; and was acting Mayor during the 1950's.
Survivors include son; S. Tony Gore, III and wife Becky of Chapel Hill, N.C., daughter: Kathy Gore Lewis of Whiteville, N.C., sister: Frances G. Caldwell of Wilmington, N.C., brother: Paul U. Gore of Tabor City, N.C., grandchildren: S. Travis Gore IV of Chapel Hill, N.C., S. Kasey Gore of New York City, N.Y. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Whiteville United Methodist Church with Rev. C.B. Owens officiating with burial following in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Active Pallbearers: Jack Hooks, Carlton Williamson, Kevin Page, Kevin Bullard, Terray Suggs, and Fuller Royal. Memorials maybe made to the Whiteville United Methodist Church @ 902 Pinckney St., Whiteville, N.C. 28472 or The Vineland Station Depot Restoration Project. McKenzie Mortuary Service.
