Howard wrote me:
"My grandfather Jan, by the way, was a guard at the queen's palace and
knew little about a day's work when he brought his brood to the USA.
His offspring took over (that good Dutch work ethic!), supported
their parents, and--for the most part--all led productive lives.
My father was a hard-working Iowa farmer who, along with many others,
lost everything during the Great Depression which took place during
my early teen years.
I taught English, with emphasis upon the teaching of English. After WWII. I
managed to earn a doctorate at Columbia University, New York City. Then
I came back to Iowa to teach at the University of Northern Iowa, C. F.
and retired in l983. In spite of the fact that I am chronolgically
advanced (Age: 82), I enjoy many activities.
I served in the U.S. Navy and participated in three invasions: Sicily,
Normandy and Southern France. When I came back to the USA after being
in the ETO, I served in the Pacific--ready for the Japanese invasion,
which, thankfully, never came about."
Howard schreef een boek over zijn ervaringen als kapitein "Aboard the LCC 60, Normandy and Southern France 1944" waarvan hij mij een exemplaar toestuurde.
