1. A letter from John to his sister Nancy who was then at King David Chesebrough's home:
"Newport, October 22, 1781"
"Dear Sister we was much Disappointed the Doctor's not coming according to his promise the morning he went away
as we had the letters wrote Ready to send by him but he did not come so you must Excuse it and take them ....en
you can get them don't fail writing as ....be very acceptable line from you ..... write you only that a recent arrival
here .....f the french fleet very lately brings news that ... we had taken three redoubts and pigeon heights from the
enemy, and that there was a Constant fire between the two armies General Washington has sent in word to lord
Cornwallis not to destroy any warlike stores or provisions as he must answer it upon his peril the next news that
comes I hope to hear that he and the rest of them are all prisoners as there appears great prospect I think at
present."
