James Stanley, Seventh Earl of Derby was born 31, January, 1606. He marri ed Charlotte de la Tremouille, daughter of Claude de la Tremouille. She be came famous for her defense of Lathom House in 1644, when it was besieg ed by 2000 parliamentarians, and of the Isle of Man in 1651. By this unio n, James became allied to the houses of Nassau and Bourbon, and to mo st of the Sovereign Princes of Europe. This Earl was distinguished for h is attachment to the royal cause during the civil war, and falling into t he parliament's hands after the battle of Worchester, was beheaded for tre ason on October 15, 1651. He was succeeded by his eldest son Charles, Lo rd Strange, who became the Eighth Earl of Derby.
His Lordship was summoned to Parliament, by writ from the 7th of March, 16 27 to November 1639 as Baron Strange, under an impression that such a Baro ny was enjoyed by his father; that, however was not the case. The summo ns amounted to the creation of a new peerage, which eventually devolved up on the ducal house of Atholl.
King Charles 1, appointed Lord Strange a joint Lord Lieutenant of Landcash ire and Chester in 1626. Charlotte by her mother was the Granddaught er of William, Prince of Orange. James made a grand tour of Europe in 162 5. On the 25th of May, 1644 Prince Rupert and a large Royalist army invad ed Landcashire. Earl James joined it victoriously at Bolton and Liverpoo l. Later in 1644 by the order of the King he went to the Isle of Man to p rotect England from sea invasion during the Civil War. Prince Rupert rema ined in command in Landcashire from 1644 to 1651 and James remained on t he Isle of Man. ; In 1650 the Earls daughters were imprisoned in Engla nd to put pressure on the Earl. The Earl was defeated in the battle of Wi gan Lane the 25th of August and Worchester on the 3rd of September, 165 1. He was beheaded at Bolton the 15th of October, 1651.
James daughter Amelia married John Murray, 2nd Earl and First Marquis of A tholl in whose descendents the Isle of ; Man and the Barony of Strange beca me invested.
