Began married life, 1826, on 300 acre farm ( 5 acres cleared, with small
house of two rooms ) about two miles east of Grange City, Fleming County,
Kentucky. They cleared the land, built stables, hog houses, sheds etc.,
remodelled the house, developed fruit orchards. Bought a carden and woolen
factory, saw mill, wheat and corn mill, and blacksmith shop. A miller for
fifteen years or more.
Joined the Union army in August 1862 as Quartermaster Sergeant of Company
A, 7th Kentucky Cavalry. Said he was 45 years old; his son Barnabus was
Captain and Company Commander. Discharged in February 1863 for " Old age
and a broken down constitution. He is 61 years of age."
Shortly thereafter he farmed several years in Illinois. Per Aunt Nan,
Nancy CashmanIndiana HFM: ..there we raised good crops of corn, potatoes, and
etc. in 1866 he sold his crops and returned to Kentucky. We went two
hundred mile through the prairies. We could not see a house, or a tree,
not even a rock of any kind. We wer six weeks on the road...
Apparently his daughter was with him, for five years, she recalled 65
years later, but his wife stayed behind in Kentucky.
Starting in 1879 numerous ( more than 25 ) requests and inquiries were
filed on behalf of the widow, daughter, and grandaughter attempting to
establish that his death ( in 1868 ) was service-connected. Quit trying in
1934.
